Cryptopia’s Innovative Solutions

Sustainability

Blockchain games are often viewed as unsustainable since many such games were launched, got hyped, saw assets rise in value, but eventually their values collapsed and players lost interest. There was no long-term plan to attract and hold new players. However, Cryptopia has been planned from the start to have a stable and self-sustaining economy.

Short vs. Long Term

Here are some of the short-term solutions most blockchain games employ and how they contrast with what Cryptopia has adopted.

Creation of New Coins

One common strategy employed by developers to incentivize new players is to distribute rewards, although this approach has certain drawbacks. While it can effectively attract and engage newcomers, it may have the unintended consequence of reducing the overall value of the in-game currency and could pose challenges in sustaining the long-term stability of the in-game economy.

Redistribution of Investor Funds

Funds are generated from investors and then funneled into the game to provide rewards for players. While this approach can be effective, its sustainability hinges on two key factors: the continuous influx of new players and the game's ongoing profitability. Unfortunately, this strategy is not a sustainable long-term solution, as it relies heavily on investor funding and would cease to operate if these investors were to discontinue their financial support.

Cryptopia’s Solutions

Cryptopia adopts a unique and sustainable approach by exclusively relying on gameplay to establish and uphold a stable economy. The majority of Cryptopia's resources are finite, creating scarcity and maintaining their high value. Initially, a limited supply of essential infinite resources, including sand, wood, stone, fruit, meat, and fish, is available to kickstart the game. Importantly, the creation of additional finite resources can only occur through a community (DAO) vote. To support new players, Cryptopia employs a fee system cleverly integrated into gameplay, involving mechanisms like resource droppage or resource repurposing. Numerous examples of these methods are demonstrated within the game's mechanics:

Pirates Looting Resources

Looting — Pirates may loot cargo from other players, the success of which is determined by their competing stats and the Pirate’s luck score.

  • If the Pirate’s stats are not strong enough to loot all the gold, part of it falls into the ocean.
  • It then becomes a reward for various quests.
    • Example: a quest can be found by diving underwater and opening a treasure box, which contains a map and key to perform your quest. After completing the quest, you will receive a portion of the dropped gold as your reward.

Crafting an Item (NFT)

Crafting an NFT — the resources used to craft are recycled as quest rewards.

Example:

  • To craft a Legendary Capture Card NFT, you will need resources (i.e. 10 rare capturing cards + 15 gold bars in order for 1 legendary capturing card; subject to change).
  • Once the Legendary card is used, it is burnt. All of the gold used to make it will be recycled as quest rewards, sustaining the game’s circular economy

What if Quests Are Not Being Performed?

Players may occasionally show disinterest in specific quests if the rewards fail to captivate them, but this is not a significant issue within Cryptopia. As the game welcomes new players who engage in various activities, their contributions gradually enrich the reward pool associated with quests. This accumulation of rewards, over time, becomes increasingly enticing to Adventurers. While it's true that the more participants a quest attracts, the smaller each individual's share of rewards becomes, it also signifies a heightened demand for these rewards, creating a self-sustaining cycle that continually draws in and motivates new players.

In conclusion, Cryptopia avoids the creation of more coins or the redistribution of investment money to draw in new players. Instead, it relies on gameplay and the interest of players to fuel quests.
